LONDON, England — Filipino tennis star Alex Eala saw her promising run at the 2026 Queen’s Club Championships come to an end after falling to American teenager Iva Jovic in their Round-of-16 showdown at the prestigious WTA 500 grass-court tournament in London.
The highly anticipated encounter marked another chapter in the growing rivalry between two of tennis’ brightest young talents. Jovic once again got the better of Eala, extending her recent success against the Filipina after also defeating her in the opening round of the 2026 French Open.
Eala entered the match with momentum on her side following a dominant 6-3, 6-2 victory over China’s Zhang Shuai in the first round. The win secured her a place in the Round of 16 and set up a much-awaited rematch with Jovic.
The clash carried extra intrigue because Eala and Jovic have built a close friendship off the court. They have faced each other frequently in both junior and professional competitions, and many observers considered their Queen’s Club meeting one of the standout matches of the tournament’s early rounds.
Despite the defeat, Eala’s appearance at Queen’s Club highlighted her continued progress on grass courts. The 21-year-old arrived in London after capturing the Birmingham Open title, her first championship of the season and second WTA 125 crown overall. Her strong performances in Birmingham and at Queen’s Club reinforced her growing reputation as one of the rising stars on the WTA Tour.
The Queen’s Club Championships marked another important step in Eala’s preparations for the grass-court season, with Wimbledon fast approaching. Although her campaign in London ended earlier than she had hoped, the experience against top-level competition on grass will likely boost her confidence heading into future tournaments.
For Jovic, the victory secured a place in the quarterfinals and further underlined her status as one of the most promising young players in women’s tennis. The American entered the tournament as the sixth seed and continued her impressive form with another win over Eala.
As the grass-court season continues, Eala remains focused on building momentum and climbing the world rankings. Although her Queen’s Club journey has ended, her recent performances suggest that bigger opportunities await in the weeks ahead.
